Decking Restoration
Weathered garden decks brought back to life with cleaning, sanding and protective oil.
British weather is hard on garden decking. The good news is that most decks are only weathered on the surface, and careful sanding reveals sound, attractive timber below.
Our Esher team applies the same care to decking as to indoor floors. You get a cleaner, safer and better-protected deck. Spring is a good time to book — see our article on decking restoration after winter.
How we restore a deck
Deep clean to remove algae, moss and dirt
Loose or rotten boards replaced and screws tightened
Sanding back to fresh, smooth timber
Protective decking oil with UV filters
Timber we work with
From pressure-treated pine to tropical hardwoods, we tailor the process to the timber. Grooved boards need extra cleaning, but they come up just as well. We can also refresh garden furniture and wooden steps while we are there.
Aftercare
Annual cleaning and a top-up coat of oil every one to two years keep decking at its best. Like re-oiling an indoor floor, a maintenance coat is much quicker than a full restoration.
Signs your deck needs attention
Grey, silvery boards that have lost their colour
Slippery boards, especially after rain
Rough, splintering surfaces
Patchy, flaking coatings
Tackling these early stops water soaking deep into the boards, which leads to splitting and rot. Most decks are restored in one or two days, depending on size and condition. Because the oil needs dry weather to cure, we keep an eye on the forecast and reschedule if needed. Late spring and early autumn are usually ideal.
Fixing damaged boards
During the clean we check every board, joist and fixing we can reach. Rotten or split boards are swapped out, and protruding screws replaced so the surface is safe for bare feet. If the frame underneath needs attention, we will tell you before carrying on.
Because outdoor timber faces the weather, we will explain at the survey what our service guarantee covers for decking. Check our prices page for typical decking costs.

Questions about decking restoration
Can grey decking be restored?
In most cases, yes. We clean, sand and treat the boards with a UV-resistant decking oil that brings back the colour and reduces slipperiness. See our decking restoration service.
Can you replace rotten decking boards?
We swap out damaged boards and re-fix loose ones as part of the job. New boards are blended in once the whole deck is oiled.
Do you need electricity and water?
A normal plug socket and parking close by is all we need. Our machines run on domestic power, and we bring all tools, materials and dust sheets.
How often should decking be oiled?
Once a year is a good rule of thumb. South-facing decks in full sun may need it sooner. Regular oiling stops the wood drying out and greying.
How are your prices worked out?
The cost depends on the size of the floor, its condition and the finish. Our prices page shows typical starting prices, and we confirm everything with a fixed written quote.
What time of year should decking be done?
We work on decking from spring to early autumn. The timber needs a few dry days so the oil can soak in properly. Our guide to decking after winter explains how to prepare.
