Re-Coating Lacquered Floors
A light abrade and fresh coat of lacquer that renews worn lacquered floors in Esher without a full sand.
Re-coating lacquered floors in Esher
Lacquer is one of the most hardwearing finishes for wooden floors. In time, walkways turn dull, fine scratches build up and the finish looks patchy. As long as the wear has not reached the bare wood, a re-coat restores the protection without sanding the floor back to timber.
Our re-coating process
A thorough clean to remove dirt, grease and polish residue
A light abrade with fine abrasive to key the existing finish
Vacuuming and tack-cleaning to leave a dust-free surface
A fresh coat of hardwearing water-based lacquer in matt, satin or gloss
When re-coating works
Re-coating works when the existing lacquer is sound and only worn on the surface. If the lacquer is peeling, the wood has gone grey or there are deep scratches and dents, the floor needs a full floor sanding first. For oiled floors, the equivalent treatment is re-oiling. Not sure which finish you have? Our oil or lacquer guide can help.
Why re-coat?
Quick, with minimal disruption
Low odour, water-based lacquers
Protects the wood and delays a full sand
Brings back a consistent, fresh look
Matt, satin or gloss?
You can keep your current look or switch to a different sheen. Matt looks the most natural and is very forgiving, satin is a popular middle ground, and gloss gives a classic shine. We can show you samples so you can choose with confidence.
How often should you re-coat?
In most homes a re-coat every few years is enough; schools and offices may need one more often. The trick is to re-coat before the wood is exposed. We are happy to advise on a maintenance plan that suits your floor.
Re-coating also suits landlords and letting agents who need a floor refreshed quickly between tenancies. A room can usually be done in a day, with the floor ready for light use the same evening.

Questions about re-coating lacquered floors
Can you quote from photos?
For many jobs, yes. A few clear photos and the room sizes let us give a guide price quickly. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.
Are your oils and lacquers pet-friendly?
They are. We use low-VOC oils and water-based lacquers that are safe for children and pets once fully dry. We suggest keeping pets out of the room for the first 24 hours, and keep claws trimmed to help the finish last.
Should I oil or lacquer my floor?
Oil soaks into the timber for a natural look and is easy to spot-repair. Water-based lacquer sits on top as a hard-wearing film that copes well with spills and busy households. We recommend the right one at the survey — or read our guide to oil and lacquer.
Do I need a full sand or just a re-oil?
If the finish is worn but the wood is not damaged, a maintenance coat is often enough. It takes a fraction of the time of a full sand and keeps the floor protected. See re-oiling.
Can a lacquered floor be re-coated?
Yes — as long as the wear has not reached the bare wood. We screen the surface, clean it and apply a new coat of lacquer, giving back an even, protective finish without a full sand.
When does an oiled floor need a fresh coat?
Busy areas like hallways and kitchens usually need a maintenance coat every one to two years. Quieter rooms can go much longer. Our guide to re-oiling and re-coating helps you judge.
