Engineered and solid wood floor repairs in Esher

Modern plank floors are tough, but a dropped pan, a leaking dishwasher or a heavy sofa dragged across the room can still leave serious damage. In most cases we can replace just the affected boards and blend them into the rest of the floor. This saves time, money and the disruption of a new floor.

What we repair

  • Cutting out and replacing damaged, dented or burnt planks

  • Re-bonding lifted or hollow-sounding boards on glued-down floors

  • Repairing water-damaged, cupped or swollen sections

  • Tightening open joints and boards that have moved

Knowing your floor

An engineered floor has a top layer of real wood on a stable core; a solid floor is one piece of timber. The type, thickness and fixing method all affect how we repair it and whether it can be sanded afterwards. If you are unsure, our guide can my engineered floor be sanded? explains how to check the wear layer.

Finishing after the repair

New planks are rarely the exact colour of a floor that has been in sunlight for years. Depending on the floor, we blend the repair locally or carry out a full solid wood restoration so the whole room is even. Lightly worn oiled floors can often be refreshed with a maintenance re-oil instead.

After a leak

Leaking appliances, overflowing baths and wet boots by the door all take their toll. Boards that have taken on water may cup, crown or swell at the joints, and dark stains can soak deep into the timber. Once the source is fixed and the floor has dried, we decide whether to sand flat or replace boards. Rushing this stage is the most common reason repairs fail.

Floating, glued and nailed floors

Floating floors click or glue together over an underlay, glued floors are bonded to the subfloor and nailed floors are secret-fixed to battens or joists. We adapt our approach to the way your floor was fitted, so replacement boards sit flush and stay put. If you have spare boards from the original fit, keep them - they are often the best match for a repair.

FAQ

Questions about engineered & solid floor repairs

All questions
Can you match replacement boards to my floor?

We match the species, width and age of your boards wherever possible. Once the floor is sanded and finished, repairs blend in. Learn more about wood floor repairs.

Will sanding wear my solid floor out?

A solid wood floor can be sanded many times over its life. Each sand removes only a very thin layer when done properly, which is why period floors are still going strong after a century.

Can you repair a water-damaged floor?

Often, yes. Light marks often sand away, while cupped or blackened boards are replaced and blended in. The floor must be fully dry first, so we take moisture readings before starting.

How are your prices worked out?

The cost depends on the size of the floor, its condition and the finish. Our prices page shows typical starting prices, and we confirm everything with a fixed written quote.

What do I need to do before you arrive?

Please clear the room of furniture, rugs and small items before we arrive. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.

Can engineered floors be sanded?

Usually, if the wear layer is at least 3 mm thick. We check the wear layer during the free survey, often by lifting a threshold strip or a floor vent. Our engineered floor guide explains more.
