Parquet Floor Sanding
Careful, multi-direction sanding for herringbone, chevron and block parquet in Esher.
Herringbone and block parquet brings real character to a home — and it deserves specialist care. With grain running in several directions, careless sanding leaves swirls and scratches that show up as soon as the finish goes on.
Our Esher team uses a multi-direction sanding sequence and fine final abrasives for a smooth, even surface that shows off the pattern. This is a specialist branch of our floor sanding services.
Getting the floor sound first
Old parquet often has loose, hollow or missing blocks, usually where the original bitumen adhesive has failed. We lift and re-bed them, and replace missing blocks with matched or reclaimed timber through our parquet floor repairs service. Our parquet restoration guide explains what is involved.

Choosing a finish for parquet
Oil gives parquet a soft, natural sheen and can be spot-repaired, while a matt water-based lacquer gives maximum protection in hallways and kitchens. If you would like a different tone, we can add wood floor staining before the final coats.
Why specialist sanding matters
Over the years parquet blocks can lift, dip and wear unevenly, especially in hallways. Diagonal passes level the floor first, then finer abrasives remove the marks left behind. Borders and corners are finished by hand-held machines so the whole floor looks consistent. The result is a crisp, even pattern with no swirl marks under the finish.
We restore parquet in period houses, flats, schools and church halls across Esher. Bigger spaces are covered by our services for public spaces. We always check for hollow blocks at the survey so repairs are included in your quote.
Most parquet rooms take two to three days including repairs and finishing. We work with dust-free extraction throughout, so the rest of your home stays clean.
Keeping parquet looking good
Oiled parquet benefits from a re-oil every few years, which avoids the need for a full sand. Every restoration is covered by our 3-month service guarantee. See guide costs on our prices page.

Questions about parquet floor sanding
My parquet is stuck down with black bitumen — is that a problem?
Many older parquet floors were laid on bitumen adhesive. It is not a problem for sanding, but loose blocks need cleaning back and re-fixing with a compatible adhesive. We check this during the survey and include it in the quote.
Can you fix parquet with missing blocks?
In nearly every case, yes. We re-glue loose blocks, replace missing ones with matched or reclaimed timber, then sand and finish the whole floor so the repairs disappear. Find out more about parquet floor repairs.
What do I need to do before you arrive?
Please clear the room of furniture, rugs and small items before we arrive. We can help move heavy furniture if we know in advance. Our preparation checklist has more tips.
How are your prices worked out?
The cost depends on the size of the floor, its condition and the finish. Our prices page shows typical starting prices, and we confirm everything with a fixed written quote.
How many coats of finish do you apply?
We usually apply two coats of hardwax oil or three coats of lacquer. Busy hallways and commercial floors can have an extra coat for added protection.
Is parquet sanded differently?
Parquet runs in several directions, so we sand it in stages at different angles. A final pass with a fine-grit buffer removes swirl marks and leaves an even surface ready for oil or lacquer.
